Ramey Sponsors Bill to Allow
DUI Fines to Purchase Crime Prevention Equipment
West Chicago, IL…State Rep. Randy Ramey (R-St. Charles) has filed a bill to allocate additional fines collected in DUI convictions for law enforcement equipment purchases that specialize in crime prevention.
“In the past, there have been strict regulations governing how DUI fines are spent on law enforcement purchases,” Ramey said. “Why limit a department’s authority to spend this money where they might need it most? Let’s give the officials the power to say where they can best use these additional revenues.”
House Bill 4139 provides that the additional fine collected by the circuit clerk from any person convicted of a DUI shall be used to purchase law enforcement equipment that will assist in the prevention of criminal violence. If passed, the rule would be effective immediately.
As defined in the legislation, DUI convictions refer to any person caught driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any other intoxicating substance.
“This bill offers authorities more choices to make important purchases in their departments,” Ramey said.
For more information on this bill, contact Ramey at his office at (630) 876-0703.
