Shop With A Cop
Yes, holiday season is here. I can tell. Everybody is asking for money. However, if you are like me, you wonder where some of your money goes. How much of this donation actually gets to the people who need it? How much goes to fund raising? Do the recipients really need it?
I spend a lot of time in Hurley, WI. The median income there, according to the 2000 census was $17371. Across the Montreal River, the border with Michigan, Ironwood is described by Wikipoedia with "The median income for a household in the city is $23,502, and the median income for a family is $30,349. The per capita income for the city is $14,131. 18.5% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line."
In the Ironwood/Hurley area, they have a different take on helping at Christmas called "Shop with a Cop." (You can hear their radio ad by clicking HERE.) Their strategy seems pretty straight forward. Each child is given money to purchase gifts for their family members. These children are selected by school counselors, the people who best know the situation of each child. Then members of local law enforcement agencies (Ironwood Public Safety, Hurley Police Department, Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, Iron County Sheriff’s Department, Wakefield State Police Post, Ojibwa Corrections Officers) then take the kids shopping for presents for their parents and siblings. The kid spends time with a positive role model and learn the joy of giving presents.
I have no doubt that there is significant NEED for assistance for these folks during the holidays. All the collected money goes directly to charity. There is no overhead. The radio stations organize and advertise it. The local police donate their time. It's not a turkey dinner that is soon forgotten. It teaches the kids something about giving.
