In response to your letter of August 24th, the board of education for Elementary School District #33 voted to award Dr. Ed Leman, our superintendent, a 4% raise on his base pay for this coming year. At the same time, Dr. Leman’s contract was modified so that he will begin paying the same portion of health care costs as our teachers, other administrators, and support staff. In Dr. Leman’s case this nets out to just over a 3% increase in salary and benefits.

The question that should be asked is whether this was a good use of taxpayer money and whether the board is administering salaries competently and prudently. My answer is an unqualified, yes.

Under Dr. Leman’s leadership the district was significantly under budget last year and we have projected balanced budgets in all funds for the coming year. At the same time the district has improved in reading scores and he has put in place a strong foundation for further gains in academic achievement this coming year. He is without a doubt an asset to our district.
