GATES Students in District 33 are Excelling

The following memo was distributed by Ed Leman, the Superintendent of District 33.

TO: Dr. Leman and Members of the Board of Education
FROM: Peg Ryan
RE: Indicators of Success #2
DATE: January 21, 2005

In spite of all that the District is struggling with at this point in time, I think it helps us all to take a minute and be reminded of our successes, and to celebrate them. It is my firm belief that success breeds success. Here are some items for the Board to celebrate.

Taken from WordMasters' Press Release January, 2005:

"A student representing West Chicago Middle School recently won highest honors in this year's WordMasters Challenge -a national language arts competition entered by over 225, 000 students annually, which consists of three separate meets held at intervals during the school year.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the Challenge, seventh grader Steven Duda earned a perfect score in the year's first meet, held in December. In the entire country only 61 seventh graders earned perfect scores. In addition, seventh grader Raelene Struckmeyer achieved outstanding results in the meet. The school's students were coached in preparation for the Challenge by Chuck Osborne..." [and other language arts teachers at the WCMS].

" A student representing Turner School recently won highest honors in this year's WordMasters Challenge.... fourth grader Davis Steinbrecher earned a perfect score in the year's first meet... only 87 fourth graders earned perfect scores. The school's students were coached ... by JeanAnne Held."

Illinois Future Problem Solving:

A team of high school students has carried on the tradition of competing in Illinois Future Problem Solving even though they must register and work as independents. The GATE team channels the information to the team and Chuck Osborne is listed as their "coach." Going into the Regional Competition they are ranked 7th. We wish them luck.

At the Junior Division (grades 4-6) District #33 students from Wegner School and Indian Knoll are ranked in the 4th, 6th, and 10th places as they approach the Regional Competition which will be held in Batavia this year, rather than our Middle School.

Community Problem Solving:

Turner School's Community Problem Solving project has, to date, installed over 90 smoke detectors in the homes of senior citizens. This program has been hugely successful, bringing generations together and allowing firemen into the homes of seniors where they might spot possible hazardous situations before a disaster occurs. I recently read a thank you note from one of the seniors who lauded the efforts of the sixth graders, "Knowing the young generation is concerned for the welfare of the elderly is a special blessing. Thank God for you...." This program has benefited both our students and our seniors.

ISAT Scores:

In the November 18 report that I gave you, I shared the percentages of our students who were reaching the "exceeds" category on the ISAT test. In this fourth year of data collection, I am pleased to tell you that our 8th grade students have hit an all time high in the area of mathematics. 79% of the identified students in the area of math were able to score at the "Exceeds" level. Many of these students have had the opportunity to study math at more advanced levels for the past four years through the Differentiation/GATE facilitators.

On behalf of these students, thank you for the support that you are able to provide this year.
