CHS Expands Fitness and Weight Room Schedules
Community High School District 94 has been able to expand access to the fitness and weight rooms at the high school, thanks to the federal Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant. In addition to replacing aging fitness and weight equipment, the high school was able to expand the hours of access to the centers by hiring staff to supervise the rooms and serve as personal trainers. Beginning on January 18, the fitness room will be open from 3:15 to 6:15 p.m. Monday. through Friday, while the weight rooms hours will be expanded in February. Coaches and personal trainers will be available to help staff, off-season athletes and other students who want to get in shape.
"This is a great opportunity for everyone, whether they need to make up for a missed P.E. class, want to start working out as part of their New Year's resolution or have an upcoming sports season to prepare for," said Physical Education Department Chair Dan Johnson. "The fitness staff will implement personal training programs and give practical advice to participants on workout routines that will help them to reach personal fitness goals," he added.
This is just one of the many benefits the school has experienced with the resources received from the PEP grant. Community High School received $252,648 for the first year of the grant to institute We-Go for Fitness, a comprehensive program that will give students the tools, knowledge and motivation to become physically fit and active and to make healthy choices throughout their lives. The school's portion of the program costs is 13.58%, an amount of $34,311. They will receive approximately $30,000 in the second year of the grant.
