House Bill 518, signed into law on August 16, requires the Secretary of State to allow the parent or guardian of a driver under the age of 18 to view the person’s driving record online through a computer connection. The online access to the driving record will terminate when the instruction permit or graduated driver’s license holder reaches the age of 18.
“This law provides yet another avenue for a parent or guardian to check up on their teen driver and takes away the possibility of a teen to hide any traffic violations they might receive,” said Hultgren. “Combined with some of the other teen driving laws the legislature has passed this year, I think Illinois is making major strides to cut down on the number of teen fatalities in driving accidents.”
Currently, the Secretary of State is only allowed, upon receipt of a written request and a fee of $12, to furnish a person with their individual driving record which includes traffic convictions, status of driver’s license stating if it has been revoked, suspended, or cancelled, and notations of accident involvement.
House Bill 518 goes into effect on January 1, 2008.
