Kirk Johnson, a 1998 CHS graduate, will be featured on 60 Minutes this Sunday, May 18th at 6 p.m. on Channel 2. Kirk’s work with The List Project, which he founded and directs, will be highlighted. The List Project works on resettling, to the USA, those Iraqis who were employees of the U.S. in Iraq during the present war.
The Iraqi translators were thoroughly vetted by the US military so they could help our troops. When these translators were hunted down, kidnapped, threatened with death and chased out of the country by angry Iraqis who resented the translators support for the Americans Kirk decided to help those who had protected him and thousands of our troops and workers. Kirk is working on our government to protect those who protected us by issuing them visas for sanctuary in the U.S. President Ford admitted 700,000 Vietnamese after the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam. Only approximately 500 Iraqis have been admitted to the U.S. Kirk’s parents, Former State Representative Tom Johnson and Ginger Johnson, are housing the first two persons on The List here in West Chicago.
The Off-Broadway play “Betrayed” is based on Kirk’s work with Iraqis. “Betrayed” has won the 2008 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play. This prestigious award recognizes exceptional achievement on Off Broadway stages. Kirk’s efforts to protect the Iraq refugees, who are among the most hunted class in Iraq, is dramatized in the play.
The play ends its run on June 28th, 2008 in New York City.
