A team of students from Community High School District #94 in West Chicago were awarded first place in the Regional Stock Market Competition. These students will also be recognized with the Annual Cabrera Statewide Award. The Cabrera Award provides a trip to New York City for the winning student team, and their teacher, so they are able to visit the New York Stock Exchange and other notable financial sites.
The winning students, part of a Consumer Education class taught by Donald Zabelin, competed in The Stock Market Game™ (SMG) program coordinated by the Illinois Council on Economic Education. Each team in the competition invested a simulated $100,000 in common stocks or mutual funds. Teams could buy and sell shares at any time during the 15 week period. “The students’ success in the game is based on how the actual stock market performs” Zabelin stated.
The CHS team that took first place had a final portfolio value of $147,134. Their return was more than 44 percent better than the performance of the S & P 500 during the same time period. Members of the team include Rogelio Del Muro, Max George, and Maribel Ramirez all of West Chicago. There were a total of 601 teams in the regional competition. Previously this team was ranked second in the statewide competition. That competition involved 2,616 teams with a total of 9,679 students.
Zabelin states that the experience was valuable for all students who participated, “The students learned why a company’s stock might be doing well in the market. They also learned about risk management and how to manage a stock portfolio.”
The SMG program is an investment simulation coordinated for teachers throughout Illinois by the Illinois Council on Economic Education, a unit within Northern Illinois University Outreach. Participation in the program is free of cost and is offered each spring through generous sponsorship by Cabrera Capital Markets, LLC with additional funding and newspapers provided by the Chicago Tribune – News In Education.
