Much has been happening in District 33 in recent days. We have a great deal to share with you... * Board of Education Vacancy - Mr. Martin Swinney recently resigned from the Board of Education as he, and his family, are relocating to Florida. A new board member must be appointed by the June 19, 2008 board meeting. The vacancy is for an 11 month unexpired term. Interested persons may pick up an information packet at the District Office, and then submit a letter of interest by Friday, May 30 to the attention of Board of Education president Dave Barclay at the following address: West Chicago Elementary School District 33 312 E. Forest Avenue West Chicago, IL 60185 For more information contact Gayl Zuardo at (630) 293-6000 ext. 203.
- Pioneer School Rummage Sale Saturday May 17 - 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at Pioneer School, 615 Kenwood Ave., West Chicago. Pioneer's smoke detector project began in the spring of 2006 after two students perished in a fire in their home. Pioneer students and staff have accomplished an incredible feat by installing smoke detectors in the homes of all of its students. The proceeds of the rummage sale will be used to purchase and install smoke detectors in the homes of new kindergarten students this fall.
- Educational Planning - District 33 is about to embark on a comprehensive analysis of our current educational program in grades kindergarten - 8. A steering committee is being formed to take a look at 21st century program models that could change the look of instruction in our District to better meet the needs of children in the technology age we now live in. The committee will first look at and make recommendations for middle level programming (grades 6 - 8 ). This comprehensive process could take at minimum a school year, and more likely, up to two school years to complete.
- Middle School Expansion - For more than a year, a committee has been meeting to discuss the concept of bringing 6th graders to the Middle School for academic and extracurricular reasons, allowing students many opportunities not available at the elementary school level. The work of this committee was put on hold once the Board of Education's enrollment study confirmed an increase in the number of students expected over the next five years. The Board of Education spent the past several months wrestling with building and/or addition options to accommodate the additional students. Dr. Leman conducted several meetings to obtain staff and PTO input in the early stages of this discussion. As a result of this feedback, the Board has received sufficient information to make a decision. The Board believes the most economical and educationally effective choice is to build an addition on to the Middle School to accommodate 6th graders from the entire district. This will free up classroom space at all six elementary buildings, and allow 6th graders many learning opportunities previously not available to them. Many, many details have yet to be worked out as to the placement of the addition, building access and parking, field usage, etc. The plan will include improvements at each elementary building, too. Rest rooms, windows, entrances, lighting, parking and more will be considered. It is anticipated that these projects cam be completed without a tax increase, however, voter approval will still need to be obtained before the project can begin. The targeted completion date will be the summer of 2011. Communications on this project will be many; please watch for more details in future Key Communicator messages, as well as our newsletter and community meetings.
- Consolidation-Collaboration Committee - District 33 has joined Community High School District 94, and the other feeder districts, Benjamin School District 25 and Winfield School District 34, to discuss ways we can work together to benefit the taxpayer. The charge of this committee is to commission a new study to determine if consolidation will benefit students and the constituency, and to look for ways we can learn from each other and save money. We will keep you apprised of this committee's progress.
