Wheaton Academy has hired a new business/computer science teacher. Along with that hire, they have found their coach to lead the successful girls’ soccer program. Scott Marksberry will replace Dave Underwood as the Wheaton Academy girls’ head soccer coach. Underwood is leaving at year’s end to take over the head coaching duties for the Sterling College mens’ soccer team in Sterling, Kansas.
Marksberry is no stranger to Illinois. Although, he resides in Tennessee, he has been affiliated with the Chicago Eagles Soccer Ministry based in Wheaton. While a student at Union University in Tennessee, Marksberry played for the Eagles and in 2004 - 2005, he was the Eagles’ Head Coach and Summer Camps Director.
Marksberry graduated from Union in 2002 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. His soccer career at Union yielded several national honors. He was named a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Academic All-American in 2000 and 2001. Those same years, his junior and senior campaigns, he received All-American honors from the NCCAA and also in 2001, he earned the NCCAA Mid-East Region Player of the Year honors.
“This is an outstanding hire for Wheaton Academy,” says Paul Ferguson, Wheaton Academy’s Athletic Director. “Scott comes to our school with extensive experience as both a player and a college coach, and he knows the Wheaton soccer community from his time with the Chicago Eagles. He has very strong relational skills and will be the type of coach that our girls will enjoy playing for.”
Marksberry led the mens’ and womens’ soccer programs at Chrichton College in Memphis, Tennessee, and most recently returned to coach at his alma mater. “I view this as a great opportunity to build on what is already a great tradition with Wheaton Academy women’s soccer,” says Marksberry. “This is a great teaching opportunity for me with my business background, but I’m also so excited about continuing to build the Warrior soccer program.” “Our girls soccer program has had a lot of success in recent years, including a 2004 State Championship,” says Ferguson. “We’ve hired a coach who has the relational skills, coaching expertise, and passion to build on that legacy.”
Founded in 1853, Wheaton Academy is a private Christian high school located in West Chicago, Illinois. With an enrollment of 630 students, the school continues to fulfill its mission of nurturing growth in its students through relationships, excellence and service to the glory of God.
