Community High School senior, Chelsea Steck, received the first place award in the Union League Club of Chicago’s annual ‘Democracy In Action’ competition. Chelsea received this first place honor because of her democracy and citizenship advocacy on both the local and global levels. She received this award, as well as a $1,750 prize, at the Union League Club’s annual George Washington Day Celebration.
Chelsea’s activities include mentoring political refugee children through World Relief, volunteering as an election judge in the First Judge program, serving homeless people at the People’s Resource Center and traveling to New Orleans to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. She has also helped to spearhead WeGo 2 Africa, a CHS school wide initiative. As a student in the Community Leadership class Chelsea helped to organize WeGo 2 Africa fundraisers. This effort has lead to CHS building a school in Sakutopi, Angola as well as the on-going support of that school. She explains “We want to provide the people of rural Angola an opportunity for a better life through education to address literacy and healthcare issues and provide an atmosphere for democracy to thrive.”
Chelsea has been involved in Dance Production for three years and has been a leader in the school’s recycling program. Academically, Chelsea is a member of the National Honor Society and is an Ellen Browning Scripps Scholar. She has been on the Honor Roll all four years of high school.
After high school Chelsea plans on majoring in International Relations at Beloit College, as well as studying in a Peace Corp Preparation Program. She plans to continue dance in college and volunteer at Habitat for Humanity.
