I happened to see Mr. Tom Tawney’s commentary relative to Jim Oberweis’ position on weakening the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. I find it very interesting that Mr. Tawney’s comments were not contained in the DuPage, where I believe he still resides, issue of the Herald but in the Kane County edition.
Mr. Tawney has a long history of many times radically supporting Hispanic, but not necessarily other, immigration issues. I do not always find fault with his positions. However comparing an amendment to or the eradication of the 14th with the horrible beliefs of the Ku Klux Klan goes beyond even what he has postulated previously.
What I don’t understand is what Mr. Tawney and others of the same caliber do not understand by the term illegal. By his own admission the 14th Amendment was adopted to protect those indentured into slavery. They did not enter this country by nefarious means or of their own volition. Unlike the illegal resident of this nation, those to whom the 14th spoke were not given a choice.
This country is a country of immigrants. We all, unless we are direct descendents of Native American tribes, have forefathers who came to America for a better life. The vast majority of whom came here for the same reasons being put forth today by those who support lawbreakers. But they entered without violating laws – a very big difference.
Contrary to the position of Mr. Tawney and other bleeding-heart, ultra liberals we do not owe these lawbreakers or their children anything. The hard earned dollars of legitimate citizens are educating those who have entered our country illegally, emergency rooms are filled with those who have not earned health care and social services are over burdened. Yet we are expected to stand by silently.
If we continue on the course that Mr. Tawny supports and the course we seem to be following we only need to look at the history of the Roman Empire and/or other failed systems to see where we are headed. Support lawbreakers if you must but let’s not try to convince others that a position against illegal immigration, and what it has spawned, can be likened to the Klan.
