On Tuesday, October 2 the Illinois House voted 104 to 4 to reverse most of the Governor’s vetoes, which impacted health care providers, education and various local projects.
“I applaud the House’s action, which comes on the heels of several highly emotional hearings about the Governor’s vetoes, not only on the House floor, but throughout the entire state over the last several weeks,” Millner said. “In light of that thorough discussion, I think most everyone realizes that a lot of these so-called ‘pork projects’ are anything but. We need to put pressure on Senate leadership to follow the will of the people on this and at least give the measure an up-or-down vote.”
During testimony at the public hearings across the state, including one in Hoffman Estates last month, lawmakers heard from service providers, the elderly, local officials, concerned citizens, and many others, about the importance of projects and programs targeted by Blagojevich.
“If Senate Democrat and Republican members work together on this, I think we can come to an agreement on how to get this sorely needed money back in the budget,” Millner said. “The House has done its part, now it is time for us to give this heavily supported bill a chance to pass or fail on its own merits- not be bottled up by politics.”
The Senate will be back in Springfield October 10th, 11th, and 12th for the second week of its scheduled Fall Veto Session. Action on restoring the budget vetoes could take place during that time.
