Guess what? If there were a grade separation with a bridge over the tracks, this wouldn't ever be a problem. Trains blocking the crossing a thing of the past. The Canadian National Railroad is now being reported as buying the EJ&E railroad. The purpose, to route their trains around Chicago. Guess what this will do to traffic on the EJ&E.
However, our illustrious city administration and council, preoccupied with boutiques, cute condominiums, improbable retail development and a new city hall, won't even consider a Washington Street grade separation.
What will it take to get their attention? A horrendous accident? Loss of life or property through delayed emergency response? Assurance that a plaque with their names on it would be placed on the overpass? Possibly demonstrations might do the job. Politicians sometimes respond. City hall is certainly not responding to reason, logic or the welfare of its citizens.
